ACAN International is a voluntary, grassroots network of individuals working across the built environment who have come together to address the climate and ecological crises.
Originally started in the UK in 2019, the movement has expanded globally into a decentralized collective of local and regional chapters. Because we function as an open platform of individual practitioners rather than companies or corporate bodies, we rely entirely on the personal energy, unique perspectives, and collaborative spirit of our members to demand systemic reform within our industry.

Our primary purpose is to coordinate ACAN’s actions on a global stage while actively driving and scaling our three central aims:
Practically, this means we work to support the formation and health of existing global chapters, host campaigns that span across geographical borders, and facilitate international thematic working groups. We also act as the network's representative to cultivate meaningful alliances with like-minded regional players and organisations worldwide.

We purposefully steer clear of rigid corporate hierarchies in order to avoid repeating traditional, top-down power dynamics. Instead, we use decentralised decision-making loosely guided by sociocratic principles, prioritising agreement and consent over a simple majority rule.
Power and leadership roles are distributed among multiple group coordinators, a steering group, and autonomous thematic circles that act under clear, self-defined mandates.
This approach ensures that everyone has an equal voice, allows us to run projects simultaneously, and gives our volunteers the complete agency to move quickly on actions they care about.
